$80 billion in losses, 40 million customers: what Anthropic's IPO filing really says

Anthropic's $80.7 billion loss is mostly an accounting one. The figure that matters is elsewhere: 40 million customers, and millions of businesses creating value with Claude.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, filed its IPO registration statement with the SEC on October 26, 2026. The figure that made the headlines is a net loss of $80.7 billion for the first half of 2026, on $16.3 billion of revenue.

That loss is mostly an accounting one. $72.4 billion comes from the remeasurement of convertible notes: the higher the company's valuation, the more these notes weigh in the accounts, with no cash going out. $8.7 billion comes from remeasuring other financial instruments. The operating loss for the half was only $0.7 billion, the second quarter was profitable (+$974 million) and operations generated $3.9 billion in cash. The filing remains cautious: profitability is not guaranteed and investments remain massive ($17.2 billion over the half).

The figure I care about is elsewhere. Around 40 million customers each pay Anthropic less than $100,000 a year, and 11,900 are above that threshold, up from 950 a year earlier. For the Fortune 500 companies that are customers, Claude represents on average less than 0.1% of their total expenses. Most of the value these tools produce stays with the people who use them.

I am one of those 40 million, and for my project, Claude's role is fundamental. Code, routines, audits, artifacts: a lot runs with Claude, and many choices are made with its point of view. It is a risk I accept, in exchange for leverage that no agency my size had three years ago, and that lets me offer a highly competitive business model.
